Trilogy Metals Secures US$35.6 Million U.S. Government Investment to Advance Alaska Mining Projects

Trilogy Metals Inc. (NYSE American: TMQ) (TSX: TMQ) has completed a strategic equity investment by the U.S. Department of War totaling approximately US$35.6 million, the company announced. The investment was made across transactions with Trilogy and South32 Limited, its joint venture partner. According to the company, Trilogy and South32 have committed the full proceeds to Ambler Metals LLC, their 50/50 joint venture, to advance exploration and development of the Upper Kobuk Mineral Projects (UKMP) in northwestern Alaska. The UKMP includes the high-grade Arctic polymetallic deposit and the Bornite copper-cobalt deposit.

The U.S. Department of War also committed to work in good faith to help facilitate financing for construction of the proposed 211-mile Ambler Road in coordination with the State of Alaska and the Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority. This road is considered critical infrastructure for accessing the Ambler Mining District, which is described as one of the richest and most-prospective known copper-dominant districts in the world. The district hosts polymetallic volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits containing copper, zinc, lead, gold and silver, as well as carbonate replacement deposits with high-grade copper and cobalt mineralization.

Trilogy Metals holds a 50 percent interest in Ambler Metals LLC, which has a 100 percent interest in the UKMP. South32, a globally diversified mining and metals company, exercised its option to form the 50/50 joint venture on December 19, 2019. Exploration efforts have focused on two deposits: the Arctic VMS deposit and the Bornite carbonate replacement deposit. Both are located within a land package spanning approximately 190,929 hectares. Ambler Metals has an agreement with NANA Regional Corporation, Inc., an Alaska Native Corporation, providing a framework for exploration and potential development in cooperation with local communities.

For readers focused on raw materials mining, this development signals a significant injection of U.S. government capital into a critical minerals project at a time when domestic supplies of copper and cobalt are increasingly prioritized for energy transition and national security applications. The Arctic deposit is one of the highest-grade polymetallic deposits in the world, and the Bornite deposit adds cobalt, a metal essential for batteries and superalloys. The commitment to facilitate financing for the Ambler Road addresses a key infrastructure hurdle that has long hindered development in the remote region. If the road is built, it could unlock not only the UKMP but also other mineral prospects in the district, potentially reducing U.S. reliance on foreign sources of copper and cobalt. However, the project still faces permitting and environmental review processes, and the road has been controversial due to concerns about subsistence livelihoods and wildlife. Trilogy Metals’ stated vision is to develop the Ambler Mining District into a premier North American copper producer while protecting and respecting subsistence livelihoods.
