Trilogy Metals Secures $35.6M U.S. Government Investment for Alaska Copper Projects

Trilogy Metals Inc. (NYSE American: TMQ) (TSX: TMQ) has executed definitive agreements with the U.S. Department of War for a strategic equity investment of approximately $35.6 million to advance exploration and development of the Upper Kobuk Mineral Projects (UKMP) in northwestern Alaska. The investment, which was previously announced, will be split evenly: roughly $17.8 million will be invested directly in Trilogy Metals, and approximately $17.8 million will be made through a transaction with joint venture partner South32 Limited (ASX, LSE, JSE: S32; ADR: SOUHY). The proceeds are committed to the UKMP projects.

Upon completion, the Department of War is expected to hold approximately 10% of Trilogy Metals on a non-diluted basis. The transaction is expected to close in September 2026, subject to customary closing conditions. This investment signals a significant endorsement of the UKMP, which is located in the Ambler Mining District, one of the richest and most prospective copper-dominant districts globally. The district hosts polymetallic volcanic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits containing copper, zinc, lead, gold, and silver, as well as carbonate replacement deposits with high-grade copper and cobalt mineralization.

The Upper Kobuk Mineral Projects are held by Ambler Metals LLC, a 50/50 joint venture between Trilogy Metals and South32. Trilogy Metals holds a 50% interest in Ambler Metals, which has a 100% interest in the UKMP. The joint venture was formed in December 2019 when South32 exercised its option to partner with Trilogy Metals. Exploration efforts have concentrated on two deposits: the Arctic VMS deposit and the Bornite carbonate replacement deposit, both situated within a land package spanning approximately 190,929 hectares.

The U.S. government's investment underscores the strategic importance of domestic critical minerals supply, particularly copper, which is essential for national security and the transition to renewable energy technologies. By backing the UKMP, the government aims to reduce reliance on foreign sources for these vital materials. The investment also provides financial momentum for Trilogy Metals and Ambler Metals to advance exploration and development activities, potentially accelerating the timeline toward production.

For the mining industry, this move highlights a growing trend of government partnerships to secure supply chains for critical minerals. It could set a precedent for other projects in the region and encourage further investment in Alaska's mineral wealth. Moreover, the collaboration with NANA Regional Corporation, an Alaska Native Corporation, ensures that development proceeds in cooperation with local communities, balancing economic benefits with the protection of subsistence livelihoods.

The project's success could contribute significantly to North American copper production, bolstering the region's position in the global market. As the world shifts toward electric vehicles and clean energy infrastructure, the demand for copper is expected to surge, making projects like UKMP increasingly valuable. The investment by the Department of War not only provides capital but also validates the project's potential to enhance national and economic security.

Trilogy Metals and its partners are committed to responsible development, and this investment will support their ongoing efforts to advance the UKMP while respecting the environment and local communities. With the closing expected in 2026, the coming years will be crucial for advancing exploration and feasibility studies to move the project forward.
