Greenland Mines Ltd (NASDAQ: GRML) welcomed the formal signing at the United Nations General Assembly of a trilateral security agreement among the United States, the Kingdom of Denmark, and Greenland. The company said the agreement, which follows a framework announced last Friday, marks a milestone in strengthening long-term Arctic and North Atlantic security while underscoring Greenland's growing strategic importance to the United States and the Western alliance.
For the mining industry, the pact could accelerate the development of critical minerals projects in Greenland, a region rich in rare earth elements and precious metals. Greenland Mines noted that its Sarfartoq and Skaergaard projects are positioned to support critical-minerals supply for the United States, Europe, and other Western allies. The Sarfartoq project's initial assessment includes a high-case pretax net present value of approximately $2.05 billion and planned annual neodymium-praseodymium (NdPr) oxide production equal to roughly 34% of all NdPr oxide currently refined outside China at 2025 consumption levels. NdPr oxides are essential for manufacturing powerful permanent magnets used in electric vehicles, wind turbines, and defense systems. The Skaergaard project is a large-scale palladium-platinum-gold and vanadium-bearing mineral system, offering exposure to precious metals and battery metal vanadium.
The agreement's formalization could provide a stable geopolitical framework that encourages investment in Greenland's mining sector, which has historically faced infrastructure and regulatory hurdles. By aligning Greenland's resources with allied downstream jurisdictions, the deal may help diversify supply chains away from China, which dominates rare earth refining. This is particularly significant as Western nations seek to secure domestic sources of critical minerals for the energy transition and national security.
Greenland Mines' strategy centers on building a multi-asset platform with exposure to rare earth magnet materials, precious metals, and select midstream processing opportunities, while advancing its assets and broader North Atlantic Critical Metals Corridor vision linking Greenland resources with allied downstream jurisdictions and industrial infrastructure.
