Canada Nickel's Crawford Project Receives Federal Approval, Marking First Mining Permit Under Amended Impact Assessment Act

Canada Nickel Company Inc. has achieved a major regulatory milestone with the federal government's positive Decision Statement for its Crawford Nickel Project, marking the first mining approval under Canada's amended Impact Assessment Act since 2019. The announcement, made on July 31, 2026, was celebrated by Noble Mineral Exploration Inc., which holds a stake in Canada Nickel and originally owned the project.

The Crawford Nickel Project, located in Ontario, is projected to contribute approximately $70 billion to Canada's GDP and support around 185,000 person-years of employment. This approval is significant not only for Canada Nickel but also for the Canadian mining industry, as it sets a precedent for future projects under the revised regulatory framework. The project was also selected as one of the first to advance under Ontario's 'One Project, One Process' framework, highlighting its importance in streamlining approvals.

Noble's CEO, Vance White, expressed congratulations, stating, 'This development confirms the Company’s vision in having transferred the Crawford Nickel Project to the team at Canada Nickel in 2019, and as a company we are proud to see Canada Nickel advance through this milestone.' He also noted that this approval could serve as a model for other properties held by East Timmins Nickel Ltd., a joint venture between Noble and Canada Nickel in which Noble holds a 20% interest.

The Crawford Nickel Project was formerly owned by Noble until 2019, when it was sold to Canada Nickel as part of a transaction that created Canada Nickel as a publicly listed company. Noble shareholders received Canada Nickel shares through a plan of arrangement, and Noble continues to hold shares in the company.

This approval comes after a prolonged period without mining project approvals under the amended Impact Assessment Act, which had faced criticism for causing delays. The positive Decision Statement signals a potential shift toward more efficient permitting for critical mineral projects, which are essential for the transition to clean energy technologies. Nickel is a key component in electric vehicle batteries and stainless steel, making this project strategically important for Canada's ambition to become a global leader in critical minerals.

The federal approval is expected to have wide-ranging implications, including job creation, economic growth, and strengthening Canada's position in the global supply chain for critical minerals. It also demonstrates the effectiveness of collaborative frameworks like the Major Projects Office in coordinating reviews between federal and provincial governments.

Noble Mineral Exploration Inc., a Canadian junior exploration company, holds interests in several properties across Ontario, Quebec, and Newfoundland, including the Holdsworth gold property and various nickel, copper, PGM, and rare earth projects. The company's shares trade on the TSX Venture Exchange under the symbol 'NOB'. More information is available on its website.
